Personality: To be refined in play.

Background

Azure grew up in Armstrong Warren on Luna, part of a line marriage with 2-3 siblings and an extended network of aunts, uncles, and cousins — a fairly typical Loonie upbringing. As a child, he was one of the kids who interacted more closely with Mycroft Holmes, developing a relationship with the AI that would later prove significant.

After enlisting in Fleet, Azure went through Basic Training alongside Victoria McKinley and Kai Le Gerrac. He met Kai at a concert before they enlisted, and the two became close friends. Azure served as copilot aboard the UEF Vigilant, a beta-class military vessel, where he was partnered with the cetacean navigator Splishy-Splashy.

The Boarding Incident

During a routine Luna-Ceres patrol — a route considered relatively safe — the Vigilant responded to what appeared to be a distress call. It was a trap. Pirates boarded the ship, killing many of the crew in the breaching action. They cut off the cockpit from the rest of the vessel — a UEF Fleet beta-class with full armaments would be an incredible prize, worth taking to the outer system to harass corporate shipping lanes.

Azure interposed himself between the boarders and Splishy-Splashy, who could not effectively defend himself. What happened next was Azure's Talent Explosion — the sudden stress of life-or-death combat triggering his latent Talent as a Prime. His telepathy let him read the intentions of the first combatant, allowing him to prevail in the fight. But in doing so he had established a deep link with that pirate, and when the pirate died, Azure experienced the moment of death alongside him — then amplified and projected it with overwhelming force, killing most of the remaining pirates.

Kai, stationed in engineering, was the first to reach the cockpit afterward. Azure was found in a state that would soon become catatonic.

Azure was given a medical release that ended his Fleet service early, with no penalty. He was transferred to Ceres Medical Center for rehabilitation.

Recovery and the Goetic Technique

At Ceres, Azure met Rin Jeong, who was recovering from the Mispahk incident. Azure's trauma was compounded by Talent Burnout — though he didn't know that's what it was at the time. Traditional therapeutic approaches failed to address both the psychological damage and the aftereffects of his explosive manifestation. Splishy-Splashy, who had remained in contact, put Azure in touch with Silence Before Dawn — an orca researcher at the University of Mare Serenitatis and an old friend of Splishy's.

Working together at UMS's Center for Talent Research and Development, Azure and Silence developed the Goetic technique: a therapeutic approach that uses medieval symbolic frameworks to externalize, name, and integrate traumatic psychological elements through shared telepathic/empathic work. Their collaboration evolved from researcher/subject to mentor/student to something approaching equals. They co-authored a paper on the technique, with Mycroft Holmes present as more than just a computer system during the work.

The paper made Azure publicly known as a telepath — a fact he accepts, though as a Loonie he holds that nobody should be forced onto a list because of how they were born.

Recruitment to the Sagan

When Splishy-Splashy left Fleet, he became pilot for the University of Mare Serenitatis. Professor Leonidas recruited him for the Mars mission, and Splishy suggested Azure as copilot. Azure accepted, seeing it as meaningful work with people he trusts.

Azure is recovered from his trauma, but the experience still shapes how he relates to his Talent. He approaches the mission hoping to bring the ship and crew home safe — and with genuine curiosity about what they might find. He's already noticed that there's more going on than they're being told.
