Kai Le Gerrac¶

Chief Engineer aboard the UMS Carl Sagan. Third-generation hybrid descendant and unknowing kinetic.

Character Summary¶

Personality: Hopeful, ambitious, adventurous, with a love of life.

Appearance: 6ft, amber cat eyes, fox-like ears, batwing tattoos on his shoulderblades. A Specter who earned his mods after years of waiting.

Background¶

Kai grew up on Luna, raised by parents who were often away. Peter and Moira Le Gerrac work as spaceship quartermasters, handling logistics for ships traveling to the farthest reaches of the solar system to keep corporate stations supplied. During their long absences, Kai was looked after by neighbors — their children Andrik and Zora becoming his closest childhood friends.

Annual family trips to Ceres punctuated his childhood. Ostensibly for medical appointments related to a genetic condition treated before birth, these visits became treasured memories: ice cream, games, sightseeing, and hours at the dockyards where his parents taught him to identify ships by class, equipment, and purpose. These trips sparked his fascination with spacecraft engineering.

By age ten, Kai was salvaging broken ship parts from scrapyards and teaching himself repairs. His parents gifted him a toolkit that he still carries — including his lucky wrench. Throughout adolescence, he attended workshops, watched tutorials, and sought practical experience wherever he could find it.

The Specter Connection¶

Andrik introduced Kai to the Specter community during their teenage years. Kai had confided his feelings of yearning — a sense of something missing, dreams of running through forests like those on Earth. Andrik showed him the subculture: nature-themed music, photos of Specters with their aspects, hours of conversation about what mods they'd get someday.

Both asked their parents. Andrik was told to wait; Kai was refused outright, his parents warning that they'd already corrected a genetic defect before his birth. When Andrik got his ear mods at sixteen, Kai felt a casual envy — but channeled his frustration into deeper research. He studied Specter aesthetics, the animals that inspired different mods, the historical origins of designs and tattoos. This curiosity about origins grew into a broader fascination with human history and archaeology.

Leaving for the University of Mare Serenitatis was what Kai needed. Andrik connected him with Specter contacts near campus, and Kai became a regular at Mistpaw before classes even started. He eventually earned his own mods — the amber cat eyes and fox ears he'd dreamed of for years.

Education and Career¶

Kai studied engineering at the University of Mare Serenitatis, with a minor in archaeology born from his historical interests. His engineering focus and practical experience led to Fleet service, where he served alongside Azure Armstrong after meeting him at a concert before enlisting. He was present during the boarding incident that led to Azure's rehabilitation on Ceres — and helped get him there.

After Fleet service, Kai completed additional certifications and was recruited to the Carl Sagan as Chief Engineer, promoted to chief specifically for this mission.

Beliefs¶

My greatest work is to strive for improvement. From shaping my body and mind to discover my best self to creating innovations in the fields of space engineering, I will make every effort to test the boundaries of what is possible.
Talents are a great unknown. I will protect Talents from being abused, and help those in my close circle to learn as much as possible about their abilities, and their origin.
Both mission objectives are vital. We must know if there is something beyond earthbound species AND provide fertile land for humanity to continue to find sanctuary outside the rigors of space. Not having the chance to visit Earth, I dream of being able to run through forests on Mars.

Instincts¶

I always keep my lucky wrench at my side. It was my first tool as I took up my engineering degree.
I always check on a crewmate if they seem to be having a rough time.
I am patient with repairs.

Session One (2026-01-23)¶

High Engineering roll during pre-flight checks identified a concern with the main power conduit between the drive and ship's power system — a materials weakness not obvious to standard diagnostics.
Shared story about the Venn study with the other PCs during their telepathic conversation
Found that Dr. Tanaka had independently identified the same power conduit concern and had already started printing a replacement part. Working with her to redesign the system so it's not a single point of failure.
The conduit failed at midpoint turnover (as anticipated); Kai and Tanaka's preparation paid off
