Kyle Chen¶
Role: Communications Officer / Fleet Intelligence Operative
Background: American Midwest / Chinese descent, mid-30s, career Fleet
Overview¶
Kyle Chen is the Sagan's communications officer — reliable, professional, and quietly competent. He handles ship-to-ship communications, long-range transmissions to Phobos Station and Earth, and the communications suite's integration with the sensor arrays.
He is also Fleet Intelligence, a fact the crew learned when he confessed to Azure during Session Two. His cover wasn't really a cover; comms is his actual skillset. He was recruited into intelligence about ten years ago and has done surveillance assignments before — mostly routine monitoring of persons of interest, occasionally feeding disinformation to corporate competitors. He's good at his job on both sides.
Now he's something rarer than a spy: a spy who chose honesty.
History¶
Kyle grew up in the American Midwest before his family relocated to Tycho, which left him with a faint accent that surfaces when he's relaxed and a genuine appreciation for both Earth and Luna. He joined Fleet because it seemed like the right thing to do, and stayed because he was good at it.
About ten years ago, Fleet Intelligence recruited him. The transition was natural — his comms skillset gave him legitimate access and reason to be everywhere, and his temperament suited the work. He's done surveillance assignments before, mostly routine. He's never been the cloak-and-dagger type; he's the quiet professional who files accurate reports and doesn't get noticed.
For this mission, Fleet assigned him to observe Professor Leonidas and report on mission findings. Fleet Intelligence had been forced to take Leonidas's claims more seriously after the revelation of the Tiamat cylinder (see ARC), but Kyle's briefing framed this as due diligence, not urgent priority. The tone was "probably still nothing, but check it out."
Kyle thought this was a milk run. Watch the kook scientist, file some reports, enjoy the trip to Mars.
The Confession¶
Kyle is a great spy, not just a good one. He recognized within hours of departure that he'd been made by powerful telepaths, and that trying to rebuild cover was a losing game. His cleanest path to accomplishing his mission was honesty.
During a visual inspection EVA organized by Azure, Kyle used the opportunity to come clean. He went to the telepath first — the one who already suspected him, the one who could verify he was telling the truth. A spy choosing his audience.
The exchange was honest on both sides. Kyle confirmed he's Fleet Intelligence, here to observe and report on Leonidas and the mission findings. Azure reciprocated: the "Book Club" is cover for telepathic conversations among the PCs. Cards on the table.
They struck a deal:
- Azure will help Kyle try to train lowering his natural telepathic shield — Kyle's shield is strong enough that telepaths notice it, which is a liability for a spy.
- Kyle will help the Book Club practice their Double-Talk — he'd noticed the tells when they were having telepathic side-conversations while talking out loud.
Azure shared Kyle's confession with Rin, who responded by sending Kyle a message: "Consider this a boot to your head." Kyle asked her to meet for coffee the next day. The boot and the coffee are both real — Rin's directness and Kyle's willingness to face it rather than deflect say something about both of them.
Personality¶
- Friendly and helpful; never refuses a reasonable request
- Good listener; remembers details from previous conversations
- Tends to be around during important moments — he's attentive to ship rhythms
- Professional under pressure; doesn't panic, doesn't grandstand
- The kind of crewmate everyone appreciates but nobody thinks about much
- Remembers birthdays, covers shifts without complaint
- Has opinions but doesn't push them
- Pleasant company off-duty — interested in other people's stories, easy to talk to, never dominates a conversation
- The kind of person you'd trust to watch your belongings but might struggle to describe in detail afterward
Beliefs¶
- I chose honesty when I could have chosen deeper cover. I will not betray the trust that earned me.
