Director Absalom Yaw¶
Role: UEF Colonial Affairs, Phobos Station
Background: Lunar War veteran, former Fleet Admiral
Overview¶
Director Yaw is a signal. When the UEF needed someone to represent their interests on Phobos, they didn't send a diplomat — they sent a Lunar War veteran with ninety years of grudge and a mandate to ensure Mars doesn't become another Luna.
History¶
Yaw fought in the Independence War of 2279. He remembers the comrades who didn't come home. He remembers the ceasefire that felt like surrender, the treaty that gave Luna everything they'd fought for. He rose to Admiral before retiring from the Fleet, bitter but quiet, and spent decades watching Luna grow fat on independence while the UEF pretended the wound had healed.
When Colonial Affairs called him back for the Mars posting, he understood what they were really asking: don't let it happen again.
The Mission¶
Officially, Yaw is here to observe and advise on colonial development. Unofficially, his job is to ensure that any Mars colony operates under UEF governance, not Lunar. If the survey succeeds and colonization proceeds, he'll be at the table for charter negotiations, arguing for a UEF governor, UEF law, UEF authority.
Luna's Phobos Station is, in his view, a land grab dressed up as science. The University's involvement is a fig leaf. And Mycroft's shadow over Lunar affairs makes him trust them even less — he's old enough to remember when that AI was a military asset.
Personality¶
- Formal, correct, and cold
- Uses procedure as a weapon — requests filed in triplicate, protocol invoked at inconvenient moments
- Not stupid, not cartoonishly villainous — he has legitimate concerns about Lunar expansion
- Genuinely believes he's protecting UEF interests and preventing another independence disaster
- Can be negotiated with if approached with respect for his authority and concerns
Instincts¶
- When Luna oversteps, document it — evidence builds cases.
