By Location

UMS Carl Sagan

The crew of the Sagan is small — fourteen people in a tin can for months. Everyone matters.

Captain Pravitha Iyer — Lunar, former Fleet. Runs a tight ship with a light touch. Old friend of Leonidas, though she doesn't know the full extent of his involvement in her getting this command.

Professor Alexandros Leonidas — The reason the mission exists. Xenoarchaeologist who claims to have evidence of pre-human intelligence on Mars. Brilliant, intense, and carrying more secrets than he lets on.

Captain Splishy Splashy — Cetacean pilot. Joyful, competent, and here because the whales asked. Has a deep bond with Azure from the Vigilant boarding incident.

Kyle Chen — Communications officer who turned out to be Fleet Intelligence. Confessed to Azure in Session Two. Now working with the Book Club rather than against them. A great spy who chose honesty when his cover was blown.

Dr. Yuki Tanaka — Quiet fusion systems specialist who turned out to be a strong precog from a family line. Independently identified the conduit weakness before Kai did. What Azure saw when she finally allowed telepathic contact shook even him.

Noor Hadid — Colonization assessment specialist. Uses they/them. Golden retriever energy — genuinely enthusiastic about the work. Leonidas considers them an unwanted imposition.

Marcus Webb — Engineering support and maintenance. Former merchant marine. Practical and unflappable. The kind of person who keeps a ship running without anyone noticing.

Dr. Osei Mensah — Materials science and physics. Here to verify or debunk Leonidas's claims about artificial elements. Skeptical but fair-minded — exactly who you want checking extraordinary claims.

Dr. Fatima Al-Rashid — Geologist and Mars surface specialist. Has a friendly rivalry with Noor over assessment methodology. Will be in her element once the team is on the ground.

Luna

Mycroft Holmes — The only known AGI. Full Lunar citizen, Council member, planetary logistics infrastructure. Present aboard the Sagan via the MYC00FT monitoring module — a disclosed communications and telemetry system, not covert surveillance. Friends with Azure.

Silence Before Dawn - Orca researcher, colleague of Azure. Skilled Telepathic trainer.

Phobos Station

The crew arrives at Phobos at the start of Session Three.

Dr. Yenni — Station Commander. An atmospheric scientist who got stuck in administration. Specter with an avian build. Thinks Leonidas is a quack.

Dr. Amaria Onisegun — Chief Medical Officer and the only physician on Phobos. Former Venn Life Sciences researcher. Pragmatic frontier doctor making do with limited resources.

Elias Vance — Mars Consortium representative and CEO of Vance Lift Systems. Corporate idealist who built the Consortium to outmaneuver megacorps through cooperation rather than competition. Not the corporate villain you'd expect.

Director Absalom Yaw — UEF Colonial Affairs observer. Lunar War veteran. Formal, precise, and politically sharp. Sees Luna's Mars presence as a land grab.

Kamaka Hygiea — Chief Security Officer. Native spacer turned Belter turned wanderer. Veteran of the Hygiea Riots, carries cybernetic prosthetics with Maori pride. Independent — works for the station, not for any faction. Recommended by Vance, trusted by Luna, resented by Yaw.

  • Kyle Chen — Mutual confession; training partnership
  • Dr. Yuki Tanaka — Allowed Azure telepathic contact; traumatic shared vision
  • Mycroft Holmes — Friends; have had direct conversation
  • Silence Before Dawn — Orca researcher at the UMS Center for Talent Research. Co-developed the Goetic therapeutic technique with Azure after his Talent Explosion. Old friend of Splishy Splashy.

Kai Le Gerrac

Victoria McKinley

Rin Jeong

  • Kyle Chen — "Consider this a boot to your head." Coffee peace offering.
  • Kamaka Hygiea — Two Belters on Phobos. Different paths out, shared understanding of what the Belt costs.
  • The Mispahk children — Rin's family of choice from the Belt. Her younger brother Sion Jeong is among them, along with Cristina and Michael Lorelli, Kirsten Jarvii, and the three Moliwa siblings (Tumelo, Kago, and Itumeleng). They're out there, living their lives, and Rin carries them with her.

UEF Government

Key figures in the United Earth Federation government:

  • Governor Marek Svoboda — Czech descent, late 40s. UEF Governor of Ceres. Sympathetic to Belters but constrained by his position.

Historical Figures

  • Dr. Benedict Marlowe — Marine biologist who made first contact with cetaceans in 2321. Still alive at approximately 170 years old, operating a deep-sea research station largely out of public view.
  • Serafina Galloway — First confirmed Talent. An NICU nurse whose projective empathy was recorded in the early 24th century. Murdered in 2329; her death galvanized the Talented community.
