Promise¶
Role: Executive Assistant to Elias Vance, Vance Lift Systems
Played by: Tasha (guest, Session 13)
Background: Belter, Vance's right hand, Prime empath (untrained)
Overview¶
Promise is the reason Elias Vance gets through his day. Executive assistant, gatekeeper, scheduler, fixer, and — when necessary — the person who tells the man who built the Mars Consortium that his tie is crooked and his proposal needs another draft. She does all of this with a smile that makes people feel like helping her was their own idea.
She is also, without knowing it, one of the most powerful empaths alive.
History¶
Born on a mid-Belt station — one of the smaller communities where everyone knows everyone and privacy is a polite fiction maintained by shared walls. Her family ran logistics coordination for inter-station shipping — not glamorous, but the kind of work where you learn to read a room fast, manage competing demands, and keep everyone feeling heard even when you're telling half of them no.
Promise was good at this from an early age. Suspiciously good. The kind of child who could walk into a tense negotiation between two station families and somehow leave with both sides feeling like they'd won. Her parents chalked it up to social intelligence. It was — but it was also something else.
She left home for Ceres in her early twenties, looking for bigger challenges. Found work in corporate administration, moved through several firms, and landed at Vance Lift Systems — a major Earth-Luna cargo transport corporation run by the Vance family. She recognized Elias Vance immediately: a genuine person in a world of performers. When Vance executed what amounted to a hostile takeover of his own family's company — wresting control to pursue his Mars Consortium vision — Promise was with him through every boardroom fight, every late night, every moment his family tried to rein him in. They're still hoping he hangs himself on the rope of the Mars bet. They'll be disappointed. Promise has been his right hand since before the takeover, and she's not going anywhere.
The Talent She Didn't Know She Had¶
Promise is an E7 empath who operated for years entirely on instinct. Her Talent awakened quietly — no explosion, no crisis, just a gradual deepening of what she already did naturally, with a unique, instinctually focused application that made it nearly invisible even to other Talents. This is consistent with established lore: Belt Talents sometimes develop so organically that neither the Talented individual nor their community recognizes it as Talent rather than personality. She was never latent — she has been a manifested, active E7 for years. Nobody knew, including her.
Status (post-Session Thirteen): the reveal happened. Azure read her — eleven successes — and Victoria's brain scan confirmed it. Promise knows now, has been read in on all seventeen civil-war-spark secrets, and joined the crew permanently. Training is the next step; the bullets below describe what she does instinctively, which is still all she can do deliberately.
What she does unconsciously:
- Reads rooms with preternatural accuracy. She knows who's lying, who's nervous, who's about to make trouble — and she thinks this is just good social skills.
- Smooths interactions. When Promise is in the room, negotiations go better. People feel heard. Tensions de-escalate. She's not projecting emotions — she's absorbing negative ones, acting as an empathic sink without realizing it.
- Shields Vance. This is the big one. For as long as they've worked together, Promise has been unconsciously extending empathic protection around Vance. Not a hard shield — more like empathic camouflage. Probes directed at Vance get... diffused. His emotional signature becomes harder to read, not because he's guarded but because she's softening the signal. This is why Rin found Vance hard to read empathically — it was never Vance. It was Promise, standing nearby, doing what she's always done: protecting her person. (One exception on record — see the GM note below.)
- Uses "nice" like a knife. Her warmth is genuine, but it's also a tool. She can make someone feel so good about helping her that they don't notice they've just agreed to something they wouldn't have otherwise. This isn't manipulation in the malicious sense — she genuinely likes people and wants good outcomes. But the empathic boost makes her persuasion unnervingly effective.
What she can't do:
- Anything deliberate. She has no training and no framework. Before the reveal, if someone had told her she was an empath, she'd have laughed — now she knows, and is starting from zero on doing any of it on purpose.
- Shield herself. She shields Vance instinctively because she cares about him, but she's wide open herself. A trained empath or telepath would read her like a book.
- Control the scope. In high-stress situations, her empathic absorption might overwhelm her. She's been running on instinct in relatively low-stakes environments (corporate negotiations, not combat). The pirate station aftermath is a lot of pain and trauma to be absorbing unconsciously.
Personality¶
- Bubbly and warm — genuinely cheerful, not performing it. The kind of person who lights up when she sees you and makes you believe she means it. She does mean it.
- Professional polish — can switch to corporate-smooth in a heartbeat. The bubbly warmth becomes poised warmth. Same person, different register.
- Sharp mind — don't mistake the golden retriever energy for lack of intelligence. She tracks details, remembers names, connects dots. Vance trusts her judgment on people because she's never been wrong.
- Protective of Vance — not in a romantic way (or maybe? that's Tasha's to explore), but in the way of someone who has found a genuinely good person in a world full of sharks and has decided that this one doesn't get eaten on her watch.
- Belter to the bone — she's polished corporate on the surface, but she grew up on a station. She knows the Belt. She code-switches effortlessly between Topside professional and Warrens local. This makes her valuable on Ceres in ways Vance himself isn't.
- The name: "Promise" — no last name. A Belter name. In the Belt, where your word is your survival and your community is your safety net, a name like Promise carries weight. It's aspirational and earned. It's who she decided to be.
This Session¶
Promise is in her element and out of her depth simultaneously. The Spice Road just rescued seventeen people. There are logistics to manage, people to comfort, and her boss is coordinating with a crew of Primes who just did something impossible. She's the one making sure everyone has blankets and food and a place to sleep while the heroes figure out the big picture.
Natural scene partners:
- Vance — obviously. Their dynamic is the entry point.
- Rin/Linnea — both Belters, both sharp, both protective of their people. Promise would gravitate to Linnea naturally.
- Victoria/Dr. Murray — helping with captive care. Promise's empathic absorption means she's unconsciously easing the captives' emotional pain. Victoria or Dr. Murray might notice that patients seem calmer when Promise is nearby.
- Toad — another Talented Belter. If Toad is perceptive (and as an active telepath, he would be), he might notice something about Promise that she doesn't know about herself. A look. A comment. "You're good with people." Said with a weight she doesn't understand.
- The freed captives — she's the warm face, the person who brings you soup and sits with you. Her empathic absorption makes her naturally soothing to traumatized people.
The reveal (if it happens):
The most likely path to discovery: the aftermath has a lot of emotional pain concentrated in a small space. Seventeen traumatized captives, three newly awakened Talents radiating unshielded, the crew processing what they've done. Promise is absorbing all of it unconsciously. At some point, the load might become visible — she's overwhelmed and doesn't know why. "I just have a headache." "I'm fine, I'm fine." But she's pale, or shaking, or suddenly needs to leave the room.
If Victoria or Azure or Rin notices and investigates, the discovery is enormous: Vance's assistant is a Prime-level empath who's been shielding him for years without either of them knowing.
Don't force the reveal. If it happens naturally, it's a beautiful moment. If it doesn't, Promise is still a great character — warm, competent, sharp, and Tasha gets to play someone fun without needing the Talent reveal to make the session work. The reveal can happen in a future session if Tasha returns.
Stats (Rough)¶
Keep it simple for a guest player. She doesn't need a full Burning Wheel sheet.
Key skills: - Administration / Bureaucracy: high (B5-B6) - Persuasion: high (B5-B6, boosted unconsciously by empathy) - Observation: solid (B4) - Logistics: solid (B4)
Talent: - Empathy: E7, untrained — all use is instinctive - No Shielding skill — she shields Vance through raw protective instinct, not technique
Traits: - Belter-born - Golden Retriever Energy (character trait — people like her immediately) - Nice Like A Knife (character trait — her warmth is genuine AND strategic)
Instincts: - When Vance is in a meeting, position myself where I can see everyone's face - When someone is upset, bring them something warm to drink - When I feel overwhelmed, push through it (this one will get her in trouble)
