Session Twelve — Wolves and Lambs¶
Played: 2026-06-12
The crew's first real fight as a unit — and they turned it into something no one expected. Not an assault but a lullaby. Ninety dice of unified will, three Talent awakenings, a ship teleported across space, and a moment where a kinetic sensed the shape of the entire solar system and found something he couldn't explain.
This was the session where the crew discovered what they could do together. The answer was: anything.
The Approach¶
The Spice Road closed on the pirate station — a hollowed-out asteroid or claimed derelict, small, roughly 200 meters across. One ship docked, a few smaller craft. Azure scanned ahead telepathically, counting minds and reading emotional signatures: approximately 15-20 pirates and a cluster of captives.
Then Azure did something no one planned.
He scanned the captives — not just counting them, but looking for Talent. He found four: one active telepath and three latents. An empath, a telepath, and a kinetic, none of them knowing what they were.
Azure's idea: pull them into the Merge. Make them part of their own liberation.
The Merge¶
Azure spent an Epiphany to pull stranger-captives into a Merge — people he had no relationship with, no Resonance link, nothing but his Talent and the conviction that these people deserved to fight for themselves. Grey broke the Merge mechanics slightly to allow it, for two reasons: rule of cool, and the Epiphany made it earned.
Kai spent an Epiphany on Gestalt, feeding power into the link.
Splishy, the cetacean who doesn't share humanity's limit on how many minds he can hold in a Merge, dropped all pretense of limitation. "Oh, right, I don't have to play games anymore." He grabbed the whole group and held them together.
The crew rolled. And rolled. And kept rolling. Artha flowed like water. The dice were extraordinary.
Ninety dice.
The most powerful psychic event in human history, born from a rescue operation at a pirate station in the Belt.
What Ninety Dice Can Do¶
The Lullaby¶
Rather than breach the station with weapons, the Merge reached out and put every pirate on the station to sleep. Gently, irresistibly, all at once. One moment they were armed and dangerous. The next, they were unconscious.
The captives were freed without a shot fired.
Kai's Strike¶
One pirate ship burned hard for escape. Kai decided it wasn't going anywhere.
With ninety dice of Merged kinetic power, Kai teleported the ship back to the station. The entire vessel — hull, drive, crew — relocated across space in an instant. The fleeing pirates went from "making a run for it" to "docked where they started" without understanding what had happened.
Ship teleportation. That's what a Prime kinetic can do inside a Merge of this scale.
Kai's Vision¶
At ninety dice, Kai's kinetic sense expanded to encompass the solar system. Every force, every mass, every gravitational interaction — too much to process consciously, but for one vertiginous moment he could feel the shape of everything.
He sensed two things he shouldn't have been able to perceive:
A massive energy signature — somewhere in the outer system, enormous and unfamiliar. Not a natural phenomenon. Something drawing power on a scale that registered even against the background of a star system. The crew doesn't know what it is or where exactly it is. Just that it's there.
Something else. A regular octahedron — a square bipyramid — with an equatorial edge of one kilometer per side. Approximately 707 meters from equator to apex. And unlike everything else in the solar system, which was transparent to kinetic sense at this scale: opaque. A void in his perception. He could sense its shape by what it displaced, but he could not sense into it. Everything else was glass. This was stone.
Kai has no framework for what either of these things means. But he felt them, and he won't forget.
Victoria's Healing¶
The Merge focus passed to Victoria, who used the pooled power for medical triage. Three captives were in critical condition — injuries that would have been fatal without immediate intervention. Victoria reached into their bodies with telepathic and kinetic precision, stabilizing what conventional medicine couldn't have touched in time.
The Awakening¶
During the Merge, the three latent Talents among the captives awakened.
- Ebony — empath. Pronouns: it/its.
- Dane Jarvii — telepath.
- Kujo Hashimoto-McDonnell — kinetic. The crew doesn't know the full surname yet.
They came into their power inside the most intense psychic event in human history. Their first experience of Talent was connection — not isolation, not fear, but unity. They were born in the Merge, surrounded by the most powerful Talented individuals alive, during an act of liberation.
They were born in unity.
The fourth captive Talent — Toad — was already active. A telepath, experienced and pragmatic, he rode the Merge with the practiced steadiness of someone who knows what Talent is. He became the anchor for the three newly awakened, the steady hand in the overwhelming flood.
Azure absorbed the energy blast of three simultaneous Talent awakenings. Riding his Epiphany, he threw eighteen dice on his own — and barely survived. Multiple Fate points spent to avoid burnout. It was the closest call of his career.
"Fuck around was fun," Azure said afterward. "But we all know what comes after."
Then he went to bed.
The Aftermath¶
Kyle's Work¶
The pirates were unconscious. Disarmed. Helpless.
Rin moved to handle what came next, but Kyle stopped her.
"No. I've got this. You haven't had to do this yet. Wait as long as you can."
Kyle "cleaned up." The session didn't dwell on it. The crew had seen the captives, the stripped hauler, the body of the family member killed during the raid. Human traffickers. The party didn't debate. They sentenced, and Kyle carried out the sentence.
Victoria, separately, had told Rin in private: "I am not the right surgeon for this procedure." She drew her line. She doesn't know that Kyle borrowed medical supplies from her stores to do the work humanely. When she finds out — and she will — that will be a conversation.
The Captives¶
Seventeen people freed in total. The hauler family — seven survivors of the original eight — plus ten others taken in previous raids. Traumatized, exhausted, but alive. Three had been in critical condition before Victoria's Merge healing stabilized them.
The three newly awakened Talents were overwhelmed: unshielded, radiating. Ebony feeling every emotion in the ship. Dane hearing every thought. Kujo accidentally affecting objects around it. They needed care, instruction, and time.
Toad stepped up to help them — the experienced Talent shepherding the newly born.
One Captive¶
The pirate vessel Kai teleported back carried one occupant who wasn't a pirate. Secured separately. Not yet interrogated at session's end. The crew focused on the victims first.
Mycroft's Response¶
During the transit following the assault, Azure received Mycroft's full response to the intelligence briefing sent earlier.
The intelligence: Mycroft had cross-referenced everything. ARC's Advanced Research Division personnel on the Deimos vessel. Anomalous energy purchases through shell companies — 340% above declared operations, consistent with large-scale physics experiments. Four pseudo-zerker incidents across the Belt in twenty-six months, all following the same pattern: Talented individuals, level 3 or higher, sudden violent behavioral change, then killed or disappeared. Someone is testing the technique far from oversight.
The strategy: The crew's Ceres plan is sound but incomplete. Find the Deimos vessel, yes — but also understand what ARC is building. The artificial gravity research and the pseudo-zerker program may not be connected, but they're happening under the same corporate umbrella. At minimum, ARC's compartmentalization means the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing. At worst, they're deliberately intertwined.
The dolphin apology: Mycroft acknowledged Splishy's formal diplomatic communication with precisely the weight it deserved — and perhaps a touch of dry humor about receiving an official cetacean diplomatic communication for the first time in his operational history. Splishy's courage in the Merge and in the apology reflects well on cetacean-AI relations, which Mycroft considers an underexplored frontier.
The connection request: Mycroft noted something odd from weeks earlier. During the Yanli healing Merge — when the crew reached from Mars to Earth — his subconscious systems had refused an incoming "connection request" due to malformed protocols. Azure had intentionally reached for Mycroft during that Merge, but his brain had gone further than he knew, attempting to actually interface with Mycroft's architecture. Mycroft's immune system — which routinely handles penetration attempts — had flagged this one as anomalous but not urgent, which is why it took until now to surface for conscious review.
The protocols were wrong. It didn't work. But Azure's brain is reaching for something it can't yet touch — not consciously, but driven by his inherent desire to connect. And Mycroft noticed.
The personal note: Mycroft said something to Azure specifically — acknowledging what Azure is becoming. Not the alien-interface arc (Mycroft doesn't know about that yet), but the fact that Azure is the one who maintained the Resonance link across interplanetary distance, who briefed Mycroft, who is becoming the communications backbone of an operation spanning the solar system. Azure is growing into something Mycroft recognizes. He didn't say what. But the recognition was there.
The Dreams¶
At the session's end, after the crew had settled and the ship was quiet, they dreamed.
The Shared Dream¶
All of them — Azure, Victoria, Rin, Kai — dreamed of the same thing. The giant ship Kai had sensed: the octahedron, the void in kinetic space. In the dream, the lights flickered on. Inside, something stirred. A sense of foreboding — not panic, not immediate danger, but the certainty that something vast was waking up.
A shared precognitive vision, touching everyone who'd been in the Merge.
Rin's Second Dream¶
Rin saw herself as Linnea at the Ceres docks. An official — male, professional — was handing over a data crystal. "Sorry, that's all I can give you," he said, eyeing her with obvious romantic and sexual interest. The scene was mundane but weirdly detailed: the weight of the crystal, the man's expression, the specific quality of the light.
And in the back of Rin's mind: she was pretty sure she'd seen this man before.
Rin's Third Dream¶
A frozen wasteland. A Tiamat figure holding scales. Before Rin, a terrible fateful choice — vast, consequential, unresolvable. Two presences flanking her: a column of flame and a column of ice. Vague, yet vivid. The kind of dream that sits in your chest for days afterward, even when you can't explain why.
Civil War Sparks¶
Spark #16: Three Talent awakenings during a rescue Merge. When this story spreads — and it will — it rewrites what people think Merges can do. Merges don't just amplify. They create.
Spark #17: Ship teleportation. Kai relocated an entire vessel. The military implications of a kinetic who can move warships at will are staggering.
Running total: 17.
Quotes¶
Splishy: "Oh, right, I don't have to play games anymore." (Drops the pretense of cetacean Merge limitations and holds the entire group.)
Azure: "Kai, I appreciate you teleporting me to my shuttle. However, you also teleported my passengers to the station!"
Kyle: "No. I've got this. You haven't had to do this yet. Wait as long as you can."
Victoria (to Rin, privately): "I am not the right surgeon for this procedure."
Azure: "Fuck around was fun. But we all know what comes after."
Mechanics¶
| Event | Roll | Result | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Azure pulls strangers into Merge | Epiphany spend | Success | Broke standard Merge mechanics; allowed by rule of cool + Epiphany |
| Kai Gestalt | Epiphany spend | Massive success | Contributed to the 90-dice total |
| The Merge (pooled) | 90 dice | Overwhelming | Station-wide sleep, ship teleportation, solar system kinetic sense |
| Azure absorbs 3 awakenings | 18 dice (Epiphany) | Barely survived | Multiple Fate points spent to avoid burnout |
Note¶
Session ended with the crew tending to seventeen freed captives, one pirate captive not yet interrogated, and Azure recovering from near-burnout. Mycroft's response received. Rin's precog dream planted. The crew is hours from deciding their next move: pursue the zerker supply chain, or press on to Ceres.
Session Thirteen picks up in the aftermath.
