Session Eight — The World Moves Back¶
Played: 2026-05-01
A dinner that was supposed to be a brief note became the entire session. The crew toured the Spice Road, read Vance into the full Tiamat picture, made the strategic decision to pursue ARC into the Belt, and discovered that Captain Fatou Diallo has been positioning herself for this moment her entire life. Then — in the final minutes — the flotilla news and Cristina's letter landed as a cliffhanger.
The players derailed the plan completely. It was perfect.
What Happened¶
Opening: Victoria's Research (Day 1)¶
Victoria's extended research roll — with Kai contributing a Kinesis die as a living data point. Seven successes this session (nine cumulative). Two discoveries:
Expansion correlates with emotional openness, not effort. With enough data to compare across multiple expansions, the pattern becomes undeniable. You can't train your way to growth. You can't militarize it. Talent deepens through genuine emotional presence.
The Gestalt pathways are common to all Talented brains. David's suggestion — and a brilliant one. Kai's Kinesis data gave Victoria the kinetic perspective she needed to see what was shared across all her samples. The neural architecture that enables Gestalt isn't unique to kinetics. It's a common substrate. Kinetics just hit the metabolic ceiling first and need external power first. The implication: every Talented person could eventually learn to draw external energy.
David contributing both the die and the discovery — the Victoria/Kai research intersection working exactly as designed.
Three Days Pass (Days 1-3)¶
Background events narrated at the top of session:
- Rin's apology to Vance (Day 1): During zero-g training, Rin apologized for being hostile in the early days. Not for being cautious — for being mean. Growth. She invited him to the telepathic read-in.
- Kai's lockdown protocols: Delegated to Marcus ("Sure boss, as soon as you send the Pilots down to pick me and the Tycho up"). Marcus returned to the Sagan, they finished repairs together, then Marcus headed to Phobos.
- Ground base finalized: Kai went down with the pilots, took Marcus to finish human-oversight setup. By end of Day 2, the ground base is ready for initial occupation.
- Tiamat crystals gathered: Kai collected a handful from the installation for study with Victoria.
- Kinesis practice — the air burst: Kai attempted to produce an air burst effect on the surface. Succeeded. Grey described it in a way that gave David clues to what kinesis fundamentally is.
- Azure: Gave Noor treatment. Shared details of the Yaw conversation with the other PCs. Relayed the conversation to Mycroft.
- Training threads: All running in the background — Rin's zero-g with Vance, tradecraft with Chen, personal shielding, firearms, emotional reversal practice.
The Zerker Tablet (Days 1-3)¶
Rin, Kamaka, and Chen working the tablet carefully. Eleven dice against Obstacle 6.
Critical detail: Rin specified that they had locked the tablet behind a firewall to prevent signaling before beginning analysis. The beacon never fired. Whoever planted the pseudo-zerker implant in Leonidas doesn't get their signal back. From their perspective: silence. They know the tablet exists, they sent the activation signal locally — but they're blind to what happened after.
The Belt kid's operational instincts: assume hostile tech does hostile things. Lock it down first, study it second.
The corporate cryptographic signature is still there in the data. The trail points outward, toward the Belt, toward ARC. But nobody is tracking them back.
Dinner on the Spice Road (Day 2 Evening)¶
Vance invited the Book Club to the Spice Road for dinner and a tour. "Tour first, or dinner first?" The crew chose tour.
Captain Fatou Diallo. Quite tall for a spacer — 6'6". Skin like ebony. A voice like honey and silk. In her second century. Wearing a blue belter-silk sari dyed to evoke deep ocean waves. Carries herself like royalty. An ivory heirloom earring from the 21st century.
Azure: "I've always wanted to see an illegal railgun." Fatou: "Well then, let me show you mine."
The tour: The Spice Road is a marvel of engineering. A railgun capable of four consecutive shots on capacitor banks before recharging — tungsten or depleted uranium slugs. Hidden maneuvering thrusters taking up half the "cargo bay," mounted on rails so they can be concealed until needed, then moved outside and locked into place. Fatou showed an engineering background throughout — this is a captain who understands her ship at the molecular level. Kai enjoyed the ambient power and magnetic fields.
Arif's profile (Azure's request): 112 years old. Descendant of African royalty — can trace her heritage back through the Lost Years. First career: doctorate in engineering and ship design. Second career: spacer law. Most recent career: captain of merchant vessels. Her company is a 10% stakeholder in the Mars Consortium. Wealth generally held in companies doing ecological restoration on the African continent, funded by UEF contracts.
Azure's immediate question: "What's her closest connection to ARC?" Answer: complicated but indirect. ARC, like many corporates, contributes to restoration projects as part of regular greenwashing. Fatou receives funding from a pool that includes ARC money. Two degrees removed — she may not even know.
The captain excuses herself just before dessert. Vance reveals that a fast UEF courier is inbound — expected to arrive middle of the night between Day 3 and 4. His own intelligence network spotted it. A 2.5g sustained-thrust courier from the Belt. Something is moving fast toward Mars.
The Read-In¶
The players began reading Vance in. Azure gave him a telepathic tour — the full emotional weight of the Tiamat facility. The operations room. The workshop. The art. The gathering place with seventeen skeletons huddled in love.
Then the warning — the Demon. The precognitive vision the one Tiamat left behind.
Azure: "Director Vance, I'm a telepath speaking to you mind to mind. I can't lie to you. That vision was not the first time I sensed that entity. It's still here, and still active. It is a threat."
Azure explained: "Something to understand — this species was entirely, intensely empathic. They never did anything alone." Then he replayed the vision of the lone Tiamat who left the others to go to Deimos and shut down the observation post.
Vance wept.
Then they showed him ARC stripping Deimos. His immediate response: "Fucking corporate bastard pieces of shit."
Strategic Discussion¶
The crew and Vance talked through "now what."
Vance's key question: "You saw ARC logos on the uniform. Ask yourselves, given their mission, why were they wearing logos?"
Azure's social nukes: "We're sitting on a number of revelations about Talent capability, any one of which would start a civil war... one we can't afford with the threat we're facing." The list:
- Talent can grow
- Merging — Talents combining into something greater
- Precognition is real
- Teleportation
- Gestalt — external power drawing
- Interplanetary telepathic range
- Upper limits of psychometry (12 million years)
Vance's strategic insight: When Leonidas makes his announcement, Mars becomes a conflagration — a distraction from anything happening farther outsystem. If the crew needs to move against ARC or use their unique capabilities, the time to do it is while everyone is looking at Mars.
Vance's honesty: "I'm having trouble focusing on the larger threat. I can imagine going toe to toe with ARC. I can't imagine fighting something 12 million years old that cracks planets."
The decision: Follow the trail. The next steps lie in the Belt. Azure asked Vance if he's willing to commit the Spice Road. "Of course."
Building the Plan¶
Iyer pulled in via telepathic conference. She agreed but raised the problem: they need to leave her a pilot. Splishy joined the call. Vance revealed his other ship — the Silk Road — will arrive in a few days (two ships making trade runs with the Belt). Crew trading to ensure the Sagan stays staffed. The Spice Road goes to the Belt.
Captain Diallo — The Revelation¶
They decided to read in Diallo.
She's a precog.
She'd had a vision: Kai standing on the Spice Road with St. Elmo's fire dancing around him, flinging a tungsten round as if he was a railgun himself, at a malevolent force.
Azure told her everything — including the Talent secrets. All of them. Because she'd already seen the endgame. Withholding information from a precog who's already witnessed the future you're building toward would be both futile and insulting.
Fatou Diallo had spent her life positioning herself to be here. Engineering doctorate, spacer law, merchant captaincy, Mars Consortium stakeholder, ecological restoration, African royalty tracing back through the Lost Years. All of it leading to this ship, this crew, this moment. She didn't know why. Now she does.
Cliffhanger¶
In the final minutes of session: the flotilla news arrives. The Belt is coming — not the work crew Rin asked for, but a movement. Families, children, lawyers, capital. And Cristina's letter.
End session. The players: "No way it's the end!"
Quotes¶
Azure: "I've always wanted to see an illegal railgun!" Rin: "That was your outside voice." Diallo: "Well, then, let me show you mine."
Vance: [prior to knowing exactly how Right he was] "Mars changes everything."
Vance: "Fucking corporate bastards pieces of SHIT!!"
Artha¶
To be confirmed with Grey.
Character Status¶
- Victoria: Nine cumulative research successes. Two new discoveries — emotional openness correlation and common Gestalt substrate. The science is accelerating.
- Kai: Ground base operational, crystals gathered, air burst achieved, kinesis fundamentals becoming clearer. David suggested the Gestalt discovery. Fatou's vision: Kai as a human railgun.
- Rin: Tablet secured and analyzed — beacon firewalled, corporate signature found. The Belt is coming home to her whether she's ready or not.
- Azure: Read in Vance and Diallo. Running the telepathic conference calls. The intelligence hub holding everything together.
- The Spice Road: Committed to the Belt run. A warship disguised as a merchant vessel, captained by a precog who's been waiting for this her whole life.
Threads for Next Session¶
- The flotilla — Families, children, lawyers, capital. Rin said "adults only." The Belt said "we're coming." How does the crew handle a movement they triggered but can't control?
- Cristina's letter — "Don't make a liar of me." The gut punch lands.
- The courier — UEF dispatch for Yaw from Colonial Affairs. The political crisis.
- Kyle's debrief — The courier carries orders for Kyle. Equipment return, assessment, the impossible position.
- Departure timing — The Spice Road to the Belt, but when? Before or after the flotilla arrives? Can the crew leave Rin's people without her?
- Silk Road arrival — Crew swap logistics. Who goes to the Belt, who stays at Mars?
- Diallo's vision — Kai on the Spice Road, St. Elmo's fire, a tungsten round flung at something malevolent. What are they heading toward?
- Vance's logistics play — The Belters are spacers. They don't build on planets. Vance Lift Systems does planet-to-orbit. He's the missing piece.
- Leonidas announcement — Still pending. Does the flotilla accelerate or complicate the timeline?
- The ARC trail — Corporate crypto signature on the tablet, Deimos shipping gap pointing Belt-ward. Where does it lead?
- Who stays, who goes? — The defining question. Which PCs and NPCs board the Spice Road? Which stay at Mars? This is the players voting on what kind of game comes next. Chen = cloak-and-dagger. Splishy = space shenanigans. Kamaka = Belt culture. The choice shapes the next arc.
